Images of the New Panasonic S1H Camera and 10-25mm f/1.7 MFT lens

Here is the press text and first images of the upcoming Panasonic S1H cine camera and Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Summilux 10-25mm f/1.7 Lens. Both products are expected to be announced on May 31st.

As previously mentioned several times the Panasonic 10-25mm f/1.7 lens will be huge in dimensions. The upcoming MFT glass should deliver superb image quality like the Nocticron 42.5mm f/1.2 or the 25mm f/1.4 MFT lens and the price tag will stand at $1,797.99.

On the other hand the L-mount Panasonic S1H will feature a 20MP full frame image sensor. The full frame mirrorless camera will offer 6K 24p, 4K 60p, 14bit DR, 10bit 4:2:2. Check out the full Panasonic S1H specs here.

From the autumn of 2019, it will be necessary to count on the LUMIX S1H. It’s the 3rd Full Format Musketeer from Panasonic, after the brave Lumix S1 and S1R.

This 3rd box, very oriented cinema and video (more than the S1) announces a world premiere of shock: the video recording in 6K / 24p (in format 3: 2) or 5,9K / 30p (in format 16: 9) . It also announces the C4K / 4K (the famous DCI) in 60p in 10 bits. It also adapts to 4: 3 anamorphic mode. Rumors were running about the arrival of the 8K, or even a GH6, but it will be 6K in Full Format. Not bad…

In short, the engineers seem to have concentrated their efforts on an invisible but problematic parameter: the heating of the case. And the higher the resolution, the more it heats! As a result, heat dispersion seems to have been studied to provide the expected video performance. However, the manufacturer states in its statement that when the temperature of the device exceeds the certified operating temperature, the device can automatically stop video recording to protect it from heat damage.

4K MODE

4K mode is not forgotten with the ability to record in 4K or better (from our point of view), to crop 6K videos in 4K, which should increase the image resolution in Crop mode or allow to reframe more. Stabilization could also be improved in this same logic.

As for personalization of the image, the LUMIX S1H also features the V-Log / V-Gamut with a dynamic range of 14 stops, practically equivalent to that of the brand’s VariCam, enhancing the texture of human skin.

Note that the S1H’s recording format is compatible with the V-Log format recorded by a VariCam or the V-Log L recorded by the LUMIX GH5 / GH5S.

The video can be saved in unlimited. It is therefore a case of “camcorder” type.

The prototype of the LUMIX S1H will be exhibited at the “Cine Gear Expo 2019” show from May 30 to June 2, 2019.

The price is of course not yet communicated.

 Press text for the Panasonic 10-25mm f/1.7 MFT lens

The arrival of a new optics in micro 4/3 is always an event in itself. A fortiori when it covers a wide-angle beach and / or it claims a constant opening. This is the case of the new Leica 10-25mm optics which equates to a focal range of 20 to 50 mm (35 mm equivalent) and which, above all, offers a constant opening of F1.7. This opening should be very interesting for videographers with a rendering that Panasonic describes as “cinema”, in any case that should favor bokeh, and low light conditions.

The new Leica optics (actually Leica licensed), consisting of 17 elements in 12 groups, including 3 aspherical lenses, 4 ED lenses, and 1 UHR lens, works according to Panasonic “as the assembly of several lenses with fixed focal lengths , favoring dynamic landscapes like portraits “. The optics, which remains compact but not so light (690 grams), would reduce chromatic aberration and spherical distortion.

Compatible with a sensor up to 240 images / s maximum, it allows to obtain a rapid autofocus. On the other hand, it is not stabilized, which however is not a major concern if the sensor is stabilized on its side.

In addition, the focus of the internal focus of the new lens is silent, thus favoring video recording. This silence is achieved by a continuous open ring notched and a stepper motor.

The Leica would also benefit from a mechanism that eliminates pumping out of focus, a problem of all interchangeable lenses designed for photography only.

The optics are announced as robust, and tropicalized, that is to say more specifically can withstand splashing and dust. The diameter of the filter is 77mm.
