Rumors: Canon EOS R6 Mark III On The Way & Coming with R3’s Stacked Sensor

Exciting rumors are emerging that Canon is developing prototypes of the EOS R6 Mark III, and they are reportedly being tested in the wild. This successor to the popular EOS R6 Mark II is expected to bring significant upgrades, including the incorporation of the stacked sensor technology found in the EOS R3, signaling a major leap forward in performance and image quality.

The standout feature of the Canon EOS R6 Mark III is rumored to be the adoption of the stacked sensor from the EOS R3. The 24.1MP stacked full-frame sensor found in the R3 is known for its incredible speed, low rolling shutter effect, and impressive dynamic range. If the R6 Mark III integrates this technology, users can expect faster burst shooting speeds and improved autofocus performance, making it a game-changer for action, wildlife, and sports photographers.

This stacked sensor is designed for faster data readout, which means the R6 Mark III could offer significant improvements in electronic shutter performance, reducing distortion while capturing fast-moving subjects. Combined with Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, the R6 Mark III is expected to deliver high-speed, accurate autofocus with enhanced subject tracking.

Rumors suggest that the EOS R6 Mark III will also see improvements in its video capabilities, including 4K recording at higher frame rates. The integration of the R3’s stacked sensor could lead to reduced rolling shutter in video, making it a powerful tool for videographers seeking smooth, professional-quality footage.

It’s also anticipated that Canon will include Canon Log 3 for better color grading and dynamic range in post-production, along with other features like HDR PQ and high-frame-rate recording for slow-motion content. A welcomed addition will reportedly be a CFe card slot, to go along with an SD slot, just like the EOS R5 Mark II.

With these rumored upgrades, the Canon EOS R6 Mark III will likely appeal to a wide range of photographers and videographers. For sports, wildlife, and action photographers, the stacked sensor and faster burst speeds could be game-changers. Meanwhile, videographers will appreciate the improved video specs, making the R6 Mark III an even more versatile hybrid camera.

When is the EOS R6 Mark III announcement ?

From CR:

There were plenty of rumors that the EOS R6 Mark III would be announced towards the end of 2024, but now we have been told a few times that the announcement will be some time in Q1 of 2025. The logical announcement would be ahead of CP+ in February, but Canon doesn’t always do any sort of big announcement ahead of that show like they did a bunch of years ago.

As Canon continues to push the boundaries of its mirrorless lineup, the R6 Mark III is speculated to bring several exciting upgrades to build on the success of its predecessor, the EOS R6 Mark II. The R6 MKII (AmazonB&HAdorama) was officially announced in November 2022.

While an official release date has yet to be confirmed, all signs point to an exciting new addition to Canon’s EOS R lineup. Stay tuned for more news as the Canon EOS R6 Mark III inches closer to an official announcement!
