The Leica SL2-S is a 24 Megapixel stills/video hybrid full-frame camera that uses the L-mount. It has built-in sensor-shift image stabilization and the camera can move the sensor in order to produce 96 Megapixel images. In this article you can find the details of the Leica SL2-S features, sales price and promotional videos.
The new Leica SL2-S is the company’s third full frame L-mount (bayonet) camera and is the most video-focused camera ever. Using a 24MP sensor, the SL2-S offers the option to capture 10-bit footage to an internal SD card or externally to a recorder, as well as high-speed sampled (i.e. very detailed) 4K / 30p shooting with no limitation in recording time.
The SL2-S has a brand-new 24-megapixel full-frame backside-illuminated CMOS image sensor, rather than the 47-megapixel sensor found in the SL2 B&H Photo Video/Adorama/Amazon. With its lower resolution, the Maestro III-powered SL2-S can capture DNG or JPEG images at up to 25 frames per second. The data collected by the sensor is quickly processed by the camera’s Maestro-III processor, along with a 4GB buffer memory. This enables endless continuous shooting at up to 9 frames per second for the first time; here the burst length in JPEG format is limited only by the capacity of memory cards in the camera’s dual UHS-II card slots.
Leica SL2-S: $4,895 at B&H, Adorama.
Additional video features are promised to arrive via a firmware update in the first half of 2021. These include an improved autofocus algorithm, focus tracking, internal 4K/60p recording (10-bit using HEVF compression), Long-GOP recording, segmented video, automatic follow focus, waveform monitoring, tally mode, color bars and an improved live view mode for low-light recording.
The Leica SLS-2 utilizes sensor-shift stabilization and this IBIS tech includes multi-shot capturing and can combine eight shots into a single 96-megapixel image. This mode requires the use of a tripod. The camera is CIPA-rated for 5.5 stops of image stabilization.
