As you know a flagship Canon full frame mirrorless camera will hit the shelves in 2019 along with some new RF lenses, such as f/2.8 zoom 24-70mm, 70-200mm, 16-35mm lenses. Now according to recent reports, first Canon super telephoto lens for RF mount is also in development, and feature a diffractive optics (DO) lens for R-series full frame mirrorless camera.
EOS R is the first camera to feature the RF lens mount with a 12-pin connection, flange back distance of 20mm and a wide 54mm mount diameter enabling even greater flexibility in lens design. The first four Canon RF lenses are the RF 24-105mm f/4L USM, RF 28-70mm f/2L USM, RF 35mm f/1.8 M IS, RF 50mm f/1.2L USM. All four lenses have customizable control rings.
Canon lenses which feature the diffractive optical (DO) are smaller and lighter compared to the same focal length lenses but the price becomes generally higher when the lenses have optical formual for DO. So more compact and lightweight RF mount lenses would be good but on the other hand these DO glasses for EOS R ($2,299 at Amazon, B&H, Adorama) will have a higher price tag.
First Canon RF Mount Super Telephoto Lens Could be in 500mm Focal Length
According to latest rumors, the focal length for this first RF mount DO lens would be 500mm. Expect it to be called as RF 500mm f/4L DO IS USM. Canon is also rumored to be working on RF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM lens. These lenses will not come anytime soon.
